This bird is mainly found forest areas of tropical asia. As the name suggest it mainly feeds on snakes but also feeds on other species as well. It lays two eggs in the breeding season the incubation period is 45 days Scientific name is Spilornis cheela. Spilornis is a genus name for serpent eagles. It is derived from two Greek words spilos meaning spot and ornis meaning bird. Cheela this is the specific epithet referring to this particular species. The name is a direct borrowing from the hindi name for kites indicating the region from which the name was given to the bird. Eagle is a symbolic of the importance of honesty and truthful principles. It also symbolises strength , freedom , good fortune and spiritual insight.
