Dragons are perhaps the most well known fantasy creatures, and appear not only in modern fantasy literature, movies and art, but also were part of historical mythology in ancient Greece, India, Persia, and China.
A dragon is a ferocious creature that combines qualities from snakes and reptiles, usually of a large size, and frequently with the ability to breathe fire. Although the characteristics of dragons differ by region of mythology (Chinese dragons differ from those from Greek mythology), modern depictions of dragons hold some common traits.
Dragons are especially popular in fantasy environments such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and many more. They are especially popular as a subject for artists because of their frequently terrifying nature, their ability to fly and breathe fire, and their frequent role as antagonists to a main character.
