Surrealism is technically a philosophical and cultural movement, but most people know it as a style of art that features the extraordinary or unexpected juxtaposed against an otherwise normal looking scene. Surrealism takes reality and bends it into something that is, well, surreal. Perhaps the most famous Surreal artist was Salvador Dali, whose “The Persistence of Memory” is almost the sole iconic work of Surrealism in the mind of most casual art observers.

However, surrealism has a large cultural influence even today, and with digital techniques, many photographers and photomanipulators strive to create stunning surreal art. Here’s a selection of the best:

Surreal Seduction by Ion Trifu

“One of the hardest thing for me when I was new to lighting, was seeing the possibilities in a location. When I first started in photography, I was lucky to have worked with a very talented photographer in Houston, TX. When I went to work for Joe, I had never been in a studio before, seen or used strobes let alone realize that you could actually make a living taking pictures. It would just blow my mind to watch Joe walk into a drab location and absolutely transform it using light.”

A great post/tutorial from David Tejada on how you can see the different possibilities on locations.
Click here to read the rest.

“The advent of high quality and inexpensive digital cameras has made it easier than ever to learn the basics of photography. The immediate feedback you get by being able to preview your images (via the LCD screen) in relationship to your exposure settings is invaluable. In the film days (not that long ago!), photographers had to take notes while in the field so that they could compare the results after the images were processed. It could take days or weeks before a film-photographer could process their images and examine their work. This could be sped up slightly if you had your own lab. Mistakes in exposure and lighting were expensive. New photographers breaking into the field faced these same challenges. Learning photography was usually a tedious and expensive endeavor.”

“Designed to provide you with a streamlined workflow, these presets for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom were designed by Photoshop Guru Jack Davis to help you get the most out of Lightroom. Organized and setup in a traditional workflow, these presets will help you quickly set the correct white balance, choose a tone curve, adjust vibrance, HSL, convert to black and white and add a vignette.”

If you aren’t using Lightroom to manage and edit your photos, you are missing out!
Personally I couldn’t live without Lightroom, and all the presets available just make this app a brilliant tool to manage and edit your photos. With that said, here are some excellent Lightroom resources:

Download a 30 day trial of Lightroom 2.0 at Adobe.com

- 85 presets to simplify and speed up your Lightroom
- Tips, videos and presets at LightroomKillerTips.com
- Great selection of presets at LightroomPresets.com
- Lightroom presets and videos at Seim Effects
- Huge selection of presets at Inside-Lightroom.com
- Lightroom Video Tutorials by Michael Tapes

What is a preset? (In case you didn’t know)
Presets allow you to add pre-defined effects and settings to images with a single click, or even apply them to hundreds of images (batch edit). This is priceless when it comes to the photographers creative workflow. Also this type of workflow is non destructive to the photo, meaning that you can make edits, and reset them to original at any time. Your changes are stored as a separate file, and are not locked to an image until you export a new file with those settings applied.
