Freckles are a skin feature that many people are familiar with. Simply put, freckles are concentrated pigments in the skin located in clusters, due to a pigmented protein called melanin. Melanin makes the skin darker, and when cells produce melanin concentrated more closely as opposed to evenly spread, the result is freckles.
Freckles are most common in people with lighter skin or a more fair complexion, and tends to be a genetic trait. Freckles frequently are triggered by exposure to sunlight, such as tanning at the beach.
Freckles can add interest and intrigue to facial features, and are sometimes considered a beauty feature. Here’s some examples of charming photographs focused on freckles.
