Screen Settings

Most of our web design clients are not aware that one of the first things they should determine about their project is what screen size their design should fit. The current stats for different screen settings are:

54% - 1024x768 14% - 800x600 24% - 1280x1024

Many clients opt for a web design that fits perfectly for a screen setting of 1024x768 because this is their own personal preference. What they don't realize is that quite a few Internet users have their screen sizes set to 800x600. (This applies especially to older users whose eyesight may be failing.) Designing for this larger setting means that important information may appear below the fold for users whose screen settings are set at 800x600. This also means that a user might have to scroll horizontally to see the entire site.

It's important to consider your target audience when making this decision. If your users tend to be baby boomers, you may want to consider a web design that fits in 800x600. If your audience tends to be younger, you can probably get away with designing for 1024x768.
