Make Your Own Site - The Basics

Article by Tem Balanco - April 14, 2008

Most people who create web pages either hire a professional web designer or use visual HTML editing software. If you are thinking about launching a web site you should consider the option to make your own site. Because you don't have to pay anyone else to do it it will be more profitable down the road.

Whatever software program you employ, you will not be the one to make all the site development decisions. You are only fully in charge when you develop the site yourself. Then you have the say over everything large and small, and you can always untangle any snags that crop up. By making your own website, you free yourself from reliance upon a company or an individual design professional. You can correct any glitch all by yourself.

It's quite easy to make your own website now thanks to XHTML and CSS. Once you have the basic knowledge, you'll find it easier to make your own website rather then using a software program to get it the way you want. You'll find it easier to type the tag for an image, instead of going through a series of menus.

Some things are easier to type in than to create with a mouse. A common example is that you have a specific feature in mind, perhaps a table of a specific height. When you create and maintain your own site you can do these things, and your site's design benefits from this type of specificity and precision.

All along the way in this procedure, if you develop your very own site you'll be thoroughly familiar with everything you've accomplished and with what is still to be achieved. When a snag does crop up, you can just look back, locate the error that needs correcting, and fix it right away. Usually, you economize if you create your site yourself and the results are superior as well.

In the past, it was very difficult to build your own website because you had to use complex layouts that were created using tables. The tables were extremely difficult to create especially when there was a table inside a table. It is not necessary to use tables at all when you make websites today. Therefore, you do not have to learn how to make tables. HTML is an easy code to understand and you will simply have to learn a little CSS. It is not difficult to learn and there are many books that will teach you plenty.
