How to Choose a Web Design Company for Your Business

Article by Vernita Sherman - April 24, 2009

Just because you have a website does not mean that you are automatically listed in the search engines. When you go to Google and type in a search term, the list of sites that come up have been indexed in Google. Google's robot determines the relevancy of each site that is listed and places websites in the order of relevancy to the search term. You could have a website that is very relevant to a particular search term, but if your site is not optimized for Google, then your site will not be listed.

What's the point of having a website if no one can find it when they search online?

Many small business owners become a victim of paying thousands for a nice looking website that was designed by a big web designing company with professional graphic artists. I call them victims because most of the time these business owners are stuck with a nice looking fancy website that cannot be found when doing an online search. In other words, they pay for something that no one sees.

What most business owners do not realize is that most web designing companies do not know anything about internet marketing - they are designers, not marketers. On the other hand most internet marketers do not know anything about website design - they are marketers, not designers. The key to choosing the right web design company for your business is to choose a company that knows both.

But then there is another problem...

When you find a web design company that has experience with internet marketing along with creating websites, they will usually charge you too much for marketing your website. That is because instead of building you a search engine optimized website, they build you a non optimized website and promote it via Pay Per Click Search Engines. Make sure that you choose a company that has experience with search engine optimization and can get you listed in Google without using Pay Per Click Advertising.

A website's rank or placement within a spider driven search engine is derived from hundreds of variables such as, back links, link popularity, click popularity, keyword density, website themes and more. Some variables are more important than others and their order of importance change all the time. There is no way to know exactly what the spiders consider more important from one month to the next, but there are basic search engine optimization fundamentals that never change. As long as your site is properly optimized, you will have no problem being listed in a spider driven search engine.

The very basic of search engine optimized websites will have the title, description, and keyword meta tags (website code) typed in. Do not choose a web designer that has no knowledge of these tags. Not knowing what these tags are is like working at Pizza Hut and not knowing what a Pan Pizza is.

Once the basics are taken care of, there are various advanced ways of optimizing a website.

No one can guarantee you an exact number of days, weeks, or months for your site to be listed, but most internet marketing companies or web designers with internet marketing knowledge can at the very least give you an average time frame, just ask.
