Here's Why Content is So Important for SEO Web Design

Article by Cheow Yu Yuan - May 20, 2009

SEO is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via organic search results. Before you can implement SEO, you must make sure that your website is search engine friendly.

One of the key factors that make your website search engine friendly is the content. Search engines send out spiders frequently out to the Internet to crawl and index content from websites. If your website is built entirely with Flash, search engines will not be able to read the content and therefore can't reward your website with high rankings.

As an owner of the website, you must ensure that it has sufficient content for visitors to read and spiders to crawl. The objective of your website is to provide information about your service or product and try to sell them to your visitors. The content should be engaging and valuable in the first place.

Many SEO consultants and copywriters create content just for search engine spiders to read. You should not do this. Although it is important to include important keywords and key phrases within your content, you should not overdo it. When you overdo it, search engines will feel that you are spamming them and you can forget about getting high rankings on their organic search results listing.

The first paragraph of your content is extremely important. On the Internet, people have very little attention span. If you cannot capture their attention within the first 3 to 8 seconds, they are going to leave your site for your competitors. So first impression is crucial and this is why you should work on your headline, sub headline and the first paragraph of every page. And you should place important keywords in the headline and first paragraph of the content to score more search engine relevancy points.

When you write your copy, do not hard sell. On the Internet, people pefer to sell themselves. Identify the problem that they are facing and present them with the right solutions. When you address the pain in a market, people will find money to buy from you. Try offering something that are useful, such as whitepapers, e-books, video, audio, etc.

You should also update your website regularly. When the content is outdated, no one likes to visit your website. If you are running a corporate website, you should add new content at least once every month. If your site is a blog, it should be updated at least 3 times a week.
