Having a solid portfolio is crucial when trying to break into the field of graphic design. Your portfolio is what employers will be using to assist them in deciding whether or not to give you an interview. If you are trying to start a freelance business you must take into consideration that potential clients will be comparing multiple portfolios in order to choose a designer for their project. So to increase your chances of being the one selected your portfolio must be unique. There are several portfolios to choose from and each has their own benefits and drawbacks which must be considered.

The hottest type of portfolios now are online portfolios. If you are in graphic design this is probably the best route for you. Many employers will assume that you've got a website. An online portfolio enhances your work if you concentrate on web design. The portfolio itself is yet another example of your work.

The benefits are- It is easy to send out as it's just a link, you can provide a look into your personality and it also allows for an interactive presentation of your work. It also has certain drawbacks. It is the most time consuming to create. You have to worry about it looking or behaving differently from computer to computer. You need the technical knowledge to set it up and it is expensive to hire someone to develop it for you. You will have to pay for a domain name and monthly web hosting.

Spread all across North America and Europe you can find graphical design schools that offer graphical design related degrees and programs.
