Fundamentals you must know to accept payment online

Article by Manish Shrivastava - June 16, 2009

Setting up an online payment system is an indispensable part of the whole web ecommerce development process and integral to any ecommerce site solution. After all, the sole purpose of initiating with an internet business is to make money online, that is, to accept payments online!

You may use an ecommerce website builder or opt for custom development by subscribing to one of the ecommerce web design services. Either way, the online payment system would involve setting up

  • A shopping cart to accept orders and maintain them.
  • A merchant account to direct all online payments you receive to your bank account.
  • An Internet gateway to connect the merchant account with the shopping cart.

To elucidate, while the shopping card is supposed to accept credit card information, it is the function of the internet gateway to run the credit card information and process deposits to your bank account.

Coming to how to choose a merchant account provider, you are suggested to consider the following:

  • The contract may span as long as five years long.
  • As you sign up, the merchant account provider would seek information on your estimated earnings through the year. Do not slip up to mention too low annual income, lest you wish to be shut down by the provider.
  • If the provider goes bankrupt, you will lose money, as generally speaking, merchant accounts hold your hard-earned money.
  • You must either make sure that your merchant account provider can handle high value credit card amounts everyday or be sure that you would not make a great deal of income.
  • As a matter of fact, merchant accounts accept VISA and MasterCard only.
  • It can take up to two weeks for a merchant account provider to transfer your online payments to your bank account.

With many manipulative merchant account providers at large, you must sign the contract for a merchant account with reasonable amount of caution.
