Are Ready Made Website Templates for You?

Article by Stephen Cope - February 13, 2007

Pre made website templates appear at first to be the ideal option to a novice webmaster/website owner. There are however difficulties with them that you should be aware of before you decide to use one.

The main problem is that they will need editing. This means that you will need a website/page editor. This isn't really a problem as there numerous editors available . However depending on the editor you use, and the editor settings you may find that the template gets changed to comply with the editor.

Even worse the editor may not even display the template correctly because it doesn't support the technology used in the template.

Providing your editor works ok with the template you still will need to change the template graphics. Most come with Photoshop graphics which need to be edited which means that you will need access to a graphics program that can edit them.

Most modern templates use external style sheets which may again need editing. Although these can be edited in a simple program like notepad doing so requires a good working knowledge of Cascading style sheets.

General Recommendations

I would always recommend you choose a template that uses:

  • HTML Navigation
  • Cascading style sheets

and avoid templates that:

  • Use JavaScript Navigation
  • Use Images for Navigation
  • Are web editor specific (i.e. FrontPage or DreamWeaver)
  • Use Frames

Meta Tags

Don't forget the meta tags! Most templates include just the page names in the meta tags. You will need to edit them as well. If your not sure what they are then you can read about them in the Meta Tags article.

Who Are They Really For?

Templates make creating a website easy provided; you have the ability and tools to edit them correctly. Although they are pitched for use by complete novices I would say that they aren't really that suitable for beginners.

They are best suited to those who feel comfortable using a web page/site editor and understand HTML, Cascading style sheets, Site structures etc. but don't have an eye or the time for good design.

Good design in this context is the site appearance. That is.. does it look good. Some have it others don't, and I would class myself as belonging to the ones that don't.

If you want to try out your ability to use a template then take a look at the .. Modifying A Website Template article.
